Diapering Your Baby

Changing Your Baby’s Diaper

Here's how to change your baby's diaper.
  1. Gently clean the baby's genitals and bottom with diaper wipes (or plain water and a soft cloth). Take extra care with creases and folds in your baby's skin.
  2. Always wipe from front to back to avoid infection.
  3. Pat dry. Apply diaper rash ointment if your baby has a diaper rash.

Don't use talcum powder because it can irritate your baby's lungs.

For more information, watch the March of Dimes video on diapering. For safety tips about changing tables, read the Consumer Reports article.
